New Playaways for 2013 (audio books) are on their way!! Check them out when they arrive!
Welcome back all,
August has whizzed by already and it is time to share my update here on the website that I sent out last week to staff!! Ms. Crawford and I have been busy busy whipping the library into shape and I think we are as ready as we can be to open up for check-out. Last week 1-3 students came for library "orientation" tours and 4-6 just finish up their tours yesterday. Seventh and eighth graders, I am hoping to see your classes by the end of the week, but it will be up to your teacher/s and when is most convenient for them. Classes came by for a visit to see our new arrangement, new book drop, Young Adult section, rearranged reading areas, etc. We have received over the summer and at the beginning of school 141 NEW chapter books for the Fiction and Young Adult sections, 157 NEW Non-Fiction books, and 66 NEW picture books for the Easy Fiction section. :0) Also, last week I sent in SEVEN boxes of books to be processed for our site worth ~$2,411.35!! All of these books are newly published review books that I get for **FREE** for our school because I have connections like that! lol Actually, my mom receives review books for her school library and many are double copies of what they send her or they don't apply to her school population so she happily shares with us. Thanks mom! Finally...I've saved the best news for last...we are getting NEW CARPET and a little bit of tile in the library!!!!!!!! WOOOOHHHOOOOOOO!!!!!!! A big THANK YOU to Ms. Curry for making it happen :0) It will be installed by mid-October. YAY!!!! Love your librarian, Kari L. Worsham, M.L.S. Harry Stone Montessori Academy Library Happy New 2011!! I hope everyone had a restful break! I thought it best to wait and post the December update now as opposed to pre-break when our brains forget everything over the past two weeks...
1. I have updated all of our Database password information and double-checked passwords for our site. I am calling it the "sheet of gold" since it gives access to such a goldmine of information! We'll get this printed on some golden paper (if I can find some) and will be available in the library for students to pick up a copy to take home if needed. This was also emailed to teachers to have available in their classrooms. Please let me know if you come across anything that didn't work and I'll check again. 2. You may have noticed in the Dallas ISD eNews that we now have a iPhone app! Check that out here: District library users can search library catalogs with iPhone app The Library Media Services Department has begun implementation of LS2 Mobile. This free app for the iPhone or iPod Touch allows users to search titles and authors, access their account, and renew or place a hold on an item. As an added bonus, when you shake the phone, a book title will be randomly selected from the district's suggested title list. For information on downloading the app, go to www2.youseemore.com/dallasisd/Default.asp?. 3. Spanish and bilingual books have been labeled in the library with red and yellow stickers that say Español on the spines. You will find these books inter-shelved in each section of the library. 4. Our Fall Book order of mostly Fiction titles arrived the last week of school in December. Those are now on display in the library for check-out. We received 199 titles worth ~$2,600.00. New titles include many series such as Harry Potter, Bone, Amelia's Notebook, Allie Finkle, Judy Moody, Captain Underpants, Horrible Harry and more! 5. Also, we have some new audio books in the library called Playaways! Be looking for a separate update about this. Parents, I will be scheduling some small group student orientations on how to use these for later this week and next before we check them out to students. Then I will post guidelines for useing them here so you will know our expectations. 6. Finally, I'd also like to schedule groups later this month for a refresher on using and finding our library books online and quick database overview, but I may be over-ambitious on this and realize that learning to use the Playaways needs to come first at the moment! We may have to move those topics to April :0) we shall see. Last but not least, baby boy and I are doing well! Due date is February 7th but I think I might make the 28th of this month my last day before going on leave. I have a Doctor's appointment next Monday afternoon that will tell me a little more about where we are and I can plan a bit better from there. <3 your librarian, Kari L. Worsham, M.L.S. Good afternoon,
First off, I want to say a special thank you to Ms. Bixler and Ms. Wright for getting some thank you notes together for Trinity City Books who gave us the book donation at the end of September. Thanks ladies! Next, I have not gotten the magazine brochure finished like I wanted to this past month. I'm sorry, please know that it is still in the works and hopefully will be wrapped up soon! But our new magazines are beginning to arrive in the library! Also, I need to mention that in the past couple of weeks it came to my library director's attention that we do not have a wi-fi hotspot in the library and apparently we should. It's under discussion and I am hopeful. Please keep your fingers crossed!! I placed our fall book order this past month totaling ~$2,700 on October 22 and those books should hopefully be arriving before Christmas. :0) I'm very excited to get some new series and have also ordered some audio books called playaways that I think the students will really like. When those come in, I will do a short orientation with students on how to use those with each class. I will also post instructions here on the blog so that students can access them at home and parents can see how they work and know the rules for using them. Our library website is really getting some usage! We had 313 page views this past month and 267 of those were unique visitors! Wow! Upcoming is the Book Fair...it should be arriving sometime this week. I have several parents who have signed up to help Ms. Crawford and I get it all set up this Friday, Nov. 5th. It will be open as a sneak peek for teachers ONLY this Friday. Book Fair flyers will go home in Thursday Folders this week and we have some flyers to send home with middle school as well. The Book Fair will run Nov. 8-12 8:00 am until 4:30 pm each day except Friday. Friday, Nov. 12 we will close at 2:30 to close up and pack up so that it will be ready for pick up the next week. Finally, we had several classes sign-up for a regular library time. Check out the schedule in the Calendar section. PK/K are coming to the library every week for story time and check out! The students received a special book backpack for their library books. :0) Ms. Jefferson's 1-3 class is alternating weeks and part of the class comes to the library for a lesson or story or computer research while the other half goes out to work on their nature journal then they switch. Ms. Young's 4-6 class is coming in three small groups every other week where I do a book talk with the students, then they check out. I've also noticed that some of you seem to have pretty regular groups that you send on certain days of the week which is nice too :0) Have an excellent week! See you in the library, Kari L.
